about TRANS>area

TRANS> area is a non profit exhibition space in Chelsea. It offers artists their first solo exhibition.

TRANS>area opened its doors on February 20, 2002. Designed by John Keenan and Terry Riley of Keenan & Riley Architects, it is located on the fifth floor of 511 West 25th Street.TRANS>area originates and co-organizes 5-8 exhibitions per year, in addition to organizing off-site exhibitions and events throughout the world.

TRANS> area off site projects:

A Smile Without a Cat (Celebration of Annlee’s Vanishing)

Inauguration night, Art Basel Miami Beach, December 4th, 2002

by Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno,

This was Annlee’s last manifestation-- her silhouette sparkled and dissipated in a series of fireworks over the skies of Miami Beach-- as she disappeared from the kingdom of representation.

TRANS>UTOPIA Shelter, Venice Biennial, 2003

A collaboration between artists Anri Sala and Edi Rama.

In 2001, Edi Rama, artist and mayor of Tirana, began to add color to buildings in the city of Tirana; these blocks of bright color became a visual manifestation of the possibility and need for change. The TRANS>UTOPIA Shelter is a depiction of this project, and a means of disseminating this gesture for change.

Recently, TRANS>area has agreed to a partnership with Moore Space, a new non-profit arts organization in Miami’s Design District founded under the initiative of Arts Patrons/Activists Rosa de la Cruz and Craig Robbins. A selection of TRANS>area’s exhibitions will travel to their site.

TRANS>area programming is generously supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz.
