Mission
The mission of PARTICIPANT INC is to serve artists through in-depth consideration, presentation and the publishing of critical writing; and to introduce this work into public contexts through exhibitions, screenings, performances, and educational programs.

Overview
PARTICIPANT INC is an educational corporation and not-for-profit alternative art space, dedicated to the presentation of artists' work in all mediums. The mission of PARTICIPANT INC builds upon alternative space methodologies, particularly a commitment to interdisciplinary, intergenerational exhibition making, and an insistence upon placing together, in one space, work from various disciplines-encouraging the coexistence of visual, literary, media, and performing arts.

Central to its mission is its educational function, manifested in the publishing of critical writing on contemporary art and curatorial practice, also in relation to fields outside of traditional art discourses. PARTICIPANT INC seeks to provide a venue in which artists, curators, writers and educators can develop, realize and present ambitious projects within a context that recognizes the social and cultural value of artistic experimentation.

New York City is enhanced by its long-standing commitment to not-for-profit art activities that function as an integral part of urban life. The social and cultural history of the downtown art scene, so resonant for generations of artists, informed the choice of a Lower East Side location. PARTICIPANT INC utilizes approximately 1000 square feet of street-level space at 95 Rivington Street for exhibition purposes. Its lower level, also visible from street level, functions as an extension of the exhibition space, as well as a collaborative office.

Our visual art exhibitions, electronic media and film programs are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
