ABOUT THE BRONX MUSEUM OF THE ARTS “The Bronx Museum of the Arts is one of the city’s more animated and resilient cultural spaces. . . . because The Bronx Museum’s exhibitions reflect its constituency, this institution is an important player in shaping New York art of both the present and the future.” The New York Times Founded in 1971, The Bronx Museum of the Arts (BxMA) is a museum of contemporary art that is dedicated to serving its own dynamic neighborhood, the South Bronx, as well as the international artworld. The Museum has a long-standing commitment to increasing audience participation in the visual arts through its Permanent Collection, exhibitions, and educational programs. The Permanent Collection is unique in its focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists of African, Asian, and Latin American descent. Additionally, the Museum has a special interest in artists who have lived or worked in the Bronx, or whose work addresses concerns specific to the Bronx. BxMA curators have conceived and organized such critically acclaimed exhibitions as One Planet Under A Groove: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art (2001) and Urban Mythologies: The Bronx Represented Since the 1960s (1999). In its thirty-two year history, BxMA has established a local and international reputation as a contemporary art museum that actively engages culturally diverse artists and audiences. As the only art museum in the borough, it serves one of the most ethnically and socio-economically diverse constituencies in New York City, largely composed of African American and Latino populations, as well as an increasing number of African, Asian, Caribbean, Eastern European, Central and South American, communities. BxMA takes bold initiatives to focus on transnational groups and their rich heritage, and presents bilingual (English/Spanish) labels and gallery guides to communicate every exhibition's key ideas and issues more effectively.
