me persigo

ENGLISH
History's Postscript
by Gabriel Kuri
What I am going to say below involves not only what I am going to say, but also what I omitted, both deliberately as well as because of the human impossibility of saying all that is sayable at each moment. Whether this is called arbitrary, thought out, too subjective, tendentious, or skillful, this discourse — like any other thing said — comes from a selective process, which assumes that which is not selected, what I do not choose to say, is in some sense irrelevant.
It is therefore useless to apologize for all that I didn’t say, and ought to say. That would not only be an absurd act of politeness, but also an ill-aimed effort. I am not overlooking the fact that the tyranny of discourse — that selective method through which we can communicate with each other — by definition, enchains. But the same language which enchains is the tool of liberation. And the confidence which one feels with this tool is usually proportional to the distance it can help us to travel.
If I speculate on all the possible implications and consequences of what I say or do, if I stop to unfold, deconstruct, analyze or celebrate each aspect of my actions or words, it is certain that I would get caught in a spiral which would completely immobilize me. I would not be capable of saying or doing anything at all, or at least nothing very worthwhile.
I can talk about talking, but I will do so without much eagerness to conclude or complete the equation. In speaking I am repeating, adding links to the chain, but then again, only by speaking can I free myself.
When I say
I chase myself
I overtook me
and when I distract that self which is overtaking me, I go back to speaking. When I stop being the pitcher to become the ball again, I can then become the journey again, which I will again make in order to overtake myself.
I want to make this distinction between the I which speaks or does, and the I which overtakes me and is aware of me, because it is precisely the balance and constant renegotiation between these two I’s — indivisible, of course — which can give some worth to what I am leaving behind or offering.
And while I am not trying to reduce my beliefs to a simple dialectic opposition between two complementary poles, this open formula usually serves as a parameter to make me realize where I am and where I’d like to be. But, above all, when and where the promise lands seems to be so that I can throw the next stone.
This balance between impulse and assurance — when it is just right — is that which I recognize, seek, and intuit in the work of the creators which attract me. I like to see work which is more intelligent, swift, sharp, ambitious, or more eloquent than that which the creator himself realizes. And there is nothing more insipid than the work which screams its wish to become a true legend, whether of the establishment or of the so-called counterculture. When I talk about work that knows more than the person who created it I do not mean to say that good faith and the lack of a clear purpose is the key to the most important kind of art. It is certain that all truly revolutionary art has been purposely made, provided that (I would add), this intention to transcend is not the theme or the obvious claim of the work.
That is my aspiration also: to make something which goes beyond me. Something that says, but also that does. Which arises from me to take on its own life and thereby frees itself from its own memory. Something which should have a measure of memory and also of improvisation. Of repetition and of beginning, so long as the distance between these two — memory and improvisation — does not become fetishistic or comfortable, or pose as originality or creativity. That is when it shall truly pave the way for a new understanding or open the door to possibility.
To free oneself of memory or of the past does not mean to deny or destroy it or its material residue (textual citations, books, museums, monuments, etc.), but to distance oneself so one can operate in the gaps between our baggage and the road’s byways.
These gaps I speak of open up in time, between the past and the present, between history and action, and also in the space between the necessities of our surroundings — which are a multiple of history — and the desires of an individual poetic.
I believe that the negotiation between that which supposedly I am required to contribute as artist, Mexican, citydweller, member of the middle class, etc. and that which I wish to do, must, because of these expectations, be delicate. Delicate because I would like to produce work which I as an audience member would like to consume. I must find openings in the landscape in which to insert my voice, orient it, and wait for the echo.
