Sharon Lockhart's Teatros Amazonas
By Adriano Pedrosa
The representation of reality, be it through text or images, is one of the trickiest tasks. Journalism, for obvious reasons, must believe in this task (it is its guiding motive) or at least its consumers (spectators or readers) must believe in it. Nevertheless, in disciplines such as anthropology or ethnography, many distrust the powers (or tricks) of representing reality. If there is one truth in all of this, it is that we don't know for sure what the subjects and objects are like, much less how to represent them accurately. In this context, photography, cinema and video, the preferred methods of documentation, are also the most deceptive. All images, either on film or in photos, are constructed, be it through framing devices (filters, lenses or lighting) or by means of production of a motif or scene (pins or adhesive tape in fashion photos, makeup on a debilitated president who needs to appear agile, vigorous and healthy before his country).
Today, art is the discipline which furnishes answers and inquiries about powers and tricks of representing reality. Indeed, it is art that never stops documenting, that operates constantly with the creation and reproduction of subjects and objects, scenes and backdrops. Far from scientific parameters, everything indicates that we are in the realm of fiction and speculation, in a strange limbo between art and science, between fiction and its antithesis. Some experiments in film and video explore explore precisely this - After all, although they are doomed to impartiality and subjectivity, cinema and photography are extraordinary techniques for recording images.
The art of Sharon Lockhart tackles with or infiltrates itself precisely in these areas, developing works on the limits between reality and its representation. In her first film, Goshogaoka, which is the name of a Tokyo suburb, Lockhart reconstructed and filmed sequences of a training session of a girls' basketball team from a local school. The issues therein dealt with corporeal discipline, building and practice, masculinity and femininity, the individual and the group. In her photos, some of them related to the film projects, there is an ambivalence between construction and representation, the pose and the instantaneous, documentation and fiction.
Lockhart's most recent film project, Teatro Amazonas(Amazonas Theater), was shot in Manaus, where the artist worked with a team that was made up of Brazilians and foreigners: the assistant director, Bia Gayotto, the director of photography, Rodolpho Sanchez (Pixote and The Kiss of the Spider Woman), composer Becky Allen and conductor, Maestro Zacarias Fernandes of the Amazonas Chorale at the Amazonas Theater. The film is deceptively simple in its structure - behind it is a complex and rigorous system of construction. The cast of Teatro Amazonas is made up of 300 residents of Manaus and was filmed in one continuous take, without cuts, for about 30 minutes, inside the Amazonas Theatre in Manaus. The camera, placed on the stage of the theater, was left in the same position during the entire film, turned toward the cast which was gathered in the theater's auditorium. The sound track was done by a chorus of 60 voices and was composed using the mathematical model of a cone, beginning with all the voices in unison, ending slowly with a gradual fading, with one voice barely being heard. The "lyrics" are rigorously minimalist: the vowels "a, e, i, o, u", sung in Portuguese - the game here is with the basic structure of the language and of the alphabet, in its Brazilian and Portuguese version, transformed into a linguistically incomprehensible poetic song. The anthropological aspect is introduced by the choice of cast members. With the assistance of Professor Gracilene Costa of the University of Pará, and Djalma Nogueira of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, Lockhart and Bia Gayotto chose a number of residents of all the city's neighborhoods; their choice was proportionate to the data obtained by the IBGE, Brazil's official institute of demographic data and statistics.
The film contains other clever conceptual plays: each actor "represents" him- or herself (there was no special instruction given to them, and some of the cast members even get up and leave "the set" during the film), and the cast is a demographic representation of the city of Manaus; all of this in a film called Teatro Amazonas - here is the irony with the representation of reality. Further, the theater is Manaus' greatest architectural landmark, an emblem of the regionís golden age, having been built in the height of the Amazonian rubber industry at the end of the 19th century. Its style is a hybrid of strong baroque accents and fine European lines, and some of its details speak eloquently of an ever-problematic relationship between metropolis and colony. The only Brazilian material used in the construction, wood, is said to have been also imported from Europe. Another subtlety, the quasi-scientific rigor of the research and construction of the film, is subverted by a powerful subjective element: after interviews with about 600 candidates, Lockhart finally opted for those with whom she established "a certain empathy". In the soundtrack there are more subtle curiosities: the sound of the film not only reproduces minimalist music, somewhat mechanical with delicate variations, but also the sounds produced by the cast in the audience. The equipment is sophisticated and sufficiently sensitive to capture the crying of a baby or parallel conversations, and the white noise of the people of Manaus corrupts the rigor of the conceptual soundtrack. Despite the detachment and objectivity of so many elements of the film - the lighting is designed without special effects in order to be "natural", the hidden lens offers a vision and a framing similar to that of our eyes - nothing is exactly as it appears to be and even though it is full of anthropological nuances, we are in the world of art. Appearances deceive us.
Box #1:
Type of Questions: "Name, age, neighborhood, tell us about your children, of those who are present which are related to you and how, how many persons in the family, what you like to do in your free time, type of work, what your day was like, what you think of the government, what you think of love, if you have already been to the theater, if you know how to sing or dance (many of those interviewed danced and sang), how you found out about the interview (most of them had found out via radio and television, Sharon and I were interviewed on the local radio and TV, pamphlets were also distributed in the neighborhoods)"

Box #2:
Manaus has 52 neighborhoods. Based on the number of seats in the theater (300) Djalma of the IBGE furnished us with the percentage of people in each neighborhood, including all the social classes. The anthropologist Gercilene did research on the type of inhabitants so that before we went to the neighborhoods we knew a little bit about their history. During the interview Gercilene also helped us by grouping people in the same family who were friends or neighbors. The interviews were done by us and recorded on videotape. In one week we interviewed approximately 600 people (I am not sure of this number. It could be more or less). Once the interview was done, we watched the videotape and we chose the people. These people were then contacted. On the day of the shooting five buses were sent to each part of the city to pick up people at their home, bring them to the theater and bring them home again. Before the filming a photo was taken of each person. At the end, we gave each person his or
her photo in a frame.

PORTUGUESE
A questões ali tratam do corpo disciplinado, da construção e do ensaio, do masculino e do feminino, do indivíduo e do grupo.
As aparências enganam.
